In recent years, we have seen a significant role reversal of who dictates mobile and computing devices usage in the work place. The consumer now dictates which devices should be used and IT is now one step behind playing catch up. This is definitely the trend and IT will remain the follower as long a devices continue to change as frequent as they do and vendors meets the security standards (encryption, password protect, etc) companies want to enforce. Mobile devices will eventually replace laptops and desktops but that is still a long way off. Cloud computing is making this gap smaller and small ever year. The more an app is web friendly, or is able to be “thin”, the need for a laptop or desktop becomes less of a necessity.

I hear a lot about the potential for mobile learning *outside* the classroom, from mobile content delivery to place-based computing. However, many of our students walk into our classrooms with more computing power in their pocket than the computers that sent astronauts to the Moon. Let’s leverage that!

Mobile devices should be adapted to those learning experiences for which they are appropriate and offer new and greater possibilities, and not adopted simply because they are popular among target learners. Where PCs/laptops offer greater learning opportunities ways must be found to make PCs/laptops available and accessible.

Enterprise data is one of the most valuable assets an institution has. Making this information available to the entire institution and beyond only increases its value. Providing secure and public data services is a foundational step to building a mobile and innovative institution. Planning for providing these services extends to project planning and RFPs and should be part of the IT culture.

When you look at the BIGGER picture you see a group of early adopters using mobile technology as a device to learn FROM. PC’s were once used primarily as tutors. What ways can mobile technologies be used to CONSTRUCT knowledge and promote “deep” learning and not simply “just in time” information. How many learners actually construct their understanding?

As institutions start dipping their toes in the water of mobile and solutions are evaluated most institutions should start with mobile web. It leverages existing expertise while allowing delivery to most every device users are using. Native (iOS, Android, WebOS, Windows Phone 7) are too time (& money?) consuming to pursue out of the gate.

How does our youth culture in high ed drive the choice & engagement of all mobile technologies on and off campus? Can high ed benefit from “watching” how student use their choice devices? My library- tech students assistants are participating in specific researched apps that have been on the “market” for about a year or 2; we are garnering data using the mobile devices. Devices serve us as conduits toward a paperless lib tech support service environment that allows for archiving data which was never possible before.

Their is a proliferation of open source frameworks that provide simple mobile services like a campus map, calendar, directory, and emergency information. While more work than hiring a vendor they help provide an institution the necessary experience to help evaluate where their mobile strategy should go while being able to leverage other institutions work. Molly – http://mollyproject.org/

Blending mobile learning with informal learning environments has the potential to increase access to education for students of all ages. Schools can no longer be responsible for addressing all of the academic and educational needs of students. Mobile learning can increase the power and effectiveness of informal learning environments such as after-school programs for youth and community programs for adults.

There are many viable options for implementing any given mobile service – ranging from native apps coded from scratch to web apps delivered by a 3rd party. The biggest challenge schools will face is not how to create them, but how to organize and present them in ways that will be useful to their intended audiences once an institution has dozens of even hundreds mobile services available.

Students seem to view some technologies as part of their social life, not part of their educational experience. They don’t necessarily want professors or homework to intrude in their social spaces. For instance, Facebook has recently implemented a way to segregate personal friends from work-related “friends”. Students may reject educational mobile apps that intrude on private space.

At West Virginia University we used the original MIT mobile framework to build our mobile website (http://m.wvu.edu/). which we launched in August 2009. Since then we’ve seen over 200% year-to-year growth in use of the site and expect even bigger numbers when the spring semester ends. We support simple central services like a campus map, calendar, directory, & emergency information. The core of the site has been open sourced as Mobile Web OSP (<a href="http://mobilewebosp.pbworks.com/).
http://mobilewebosp.pbworks.com/).>
<a href="http://mobilewebosp.pbworks.com/).
At the same time a student developed an iPhone app called iWVU. We have since worked with the student to make sure that the content of the app meets our needs/requirements and it is entering it’s fourth version.
